Education is the cornerstone of S.A.F.E.'s purpose. We believe that education for both individuals struggling with addiction AND their friends and family regarding behavior patterns, cognitive changes impacting decision making, and strategies to change these thought and behavior patterns is a crucial component of recovery as well as successful re-integration to the community that is lacking in traditional recovery approaches. S.A.F.E. utilizes SMART Recovery principles to provide weekly lessons related to cognitive behavioral change needed to create lasting change.
We believe that support is a key aspect of healing. At S.A.F.E., ALL are welcome - regardless of your past, your presents, or even your future. We welcome others EXACTLY as they are at any given moment, whether you have made a step forward or back. At our meetings, you will meet people who have battled addiction themselves, along with their friends and family who are in need of education and support as well. True recovery does not happen at the individual level - it requires a true team effort and a community of people armed with the right tools and knowledge to provide the best support possible.
The only thing more dangerous for our community than denial of a highly relevant problem is allowing stigma around substance use and addiction to run rampant. We believe that the communities that are best positioned to fight the problem head on are ones to both acknowledge the issues at hand as well as the real root of the problem, which is NOT the individuals who are suffering. We spend time educating our community to reduce the stigma that hamstrings progress and empower others to play an active role in creating solutions rather than misconceptions.
